How to Choose the Best Smartwatch

Platform Compatibility

This is the #1 factor. Apple Watch only works with iPhone. Most Wear OS watches (Samsung, Google) work only with Android. Garmin works with both platforms. Choosing the wrong platform means losing most features.

Battery Life: The Trade-off

Apple and Samsung watches last 1–2 days. Google Pixel Watch 4 reaches 40 hours. Garmin Venu 4 lasts 12 days. The better the smartwatch features, the shorter the battery life tends to be.

Health vs. Fitness Sensors

Health sensors (ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension alerts) are best on Apple and Samsung. Deep training data (VO2 max, Training Load, recovery) is best on Garmin. Decide which matters more for your lifestyle.

App Ecosystems

Apple's App Store has by far the most smartwatch apps. Samsung (Galaxy Store) is second. Garmin's Connect IQ store is small but focused on fitness. For productivity apps on your wrist, Apple wins.

Size and Comfort

Smartwatches range from 40mm (Apple SE 3) to 49mm (Apple Ultra 3). Larger cases are easier to read but may not suit smaller wrists. Try a watch in-store or check wrist measurements before buying.

LTE vs. GPS-only

LTE models work without your phone — calls, messages, streaming. They cost $50–100 more and usually require a carrier plan (~$10/month). For most people, GPS-only is fine.
