Buying Guide

Do You Actually Need a DAC/Amp?

What a DAC Does

Your phone and laptop have built-in DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters), but they're designed for cost, not quality. A dedicated DAC converts digital audio with far lower noise and distortion, giving headphones a cleaner signal to work with.

What an Amp Does

Headphone amplifiers provide the current and voltage that demanding headphones need. High-impedance cans (150Ω+) and planar magnetics are often underpowered by phones — an amp unlocks their full dynamic range and bass extension.

Do You Need One?

If you own headphones over $150, yes. If you're using $30 earbuds, no. The rule: your source should never be the weakest link in your chain. A $400 headphone out of a phone jack is an upgrade left on the table.

Balanced vs. Single-Ended

Balanced output (4.4mm Pentaconn or XLR) doubles the power output and reduces crosstalk. If your headphones support balanced cables, it's a meaningful upgrade. FiiO K7 and iFi Zen DAC 3 both offer 4.4mm balanced.

DAC Chips: AKM vs ESS vs Burr-Brown

AKM (Asahi Kasei) chips tend toward warmth and musicality. ESS Sabre chips are ultra-neutral and measured. Burr-Brown (Texas Instruments) chips, used by iFi, are known for their organic, musical character. All three can sound excellent.

Noise Floor Matters for IEMs

Sensitive in-ear monitors amplify background noise. Look for a DAC/Amp with an SNR above 120dB and a noise floor spec below -100dBV. iFi's IEMatch feature and FiiO's low-gain mode both address this specifically.
