Buying Guide

Choosing a Desktop DAC/Amp

Power: How Much Do You Need?

Dynamic headphones 32-150Ω: 500mW is plenty. Dynamic 150-300Ω: 1000mW minimum. Planar magnetics (HiFiMan, Audeze): 2000mW+ recommended. When in doubt, get more power — you can always turn it down.

AKM vs ESS Chips

AKM chips (FiiO K7) are known for warmth and naturalness. ESS Sabre chips (Topping, FiiO K9 Pro) are ultra-neutral with near-perfect measurements. Both can sound excellent — choose based on your headphone pairing and taste.

Balanced Output: Is It Worth It?

Yes, if your headphones support it. Balanced output from 4.4mm or XLR connections typically doubles power output and reduces crosstalk. The FiiO K7's balanced output is one of the main reasons it outperforms similarly priced competitors.

Stack vs All-in-One

Separate DAC + Amp stacks let you upgrade components individually — swap the DAC when technology improves, keep the amp. All-in-one units (FiiO K7, iFi NEO iDSD 2) are cleaner on the desk and slightly better value at entry level.

Preamp Output: Do You Need It?

If you have powered speakers or studio monitors, a preamp output (RCA or XLR) lets your DAC/Amp serve as a volume control for the whole system. The iFi NEO iDSD 2 and Topping DX3 Pro+ both include this feature.

When to Spend More

The performance jump from $150 to $300 is significant. From $300 to $600 is smaller. Above $600, you're paying for flagship chips, maximum power, and premium build. The FiiO K7 at $170 hits 90% of K9 Pro performance at half the price.
